Primary color project

Grade: Kindergarten
Purpose: Introduce primary colors so students can identify them
Learning Targets: (1) Identifies and uses primary colors and (2) draws a familiar place

The color wheel was shown to the children and a discussion about primary colors helped the children learn what they were. Artwork containing the primary colors were shown and discussed. Students were asked to identify the primary colors in each work.

Each child was given a set of oil crayons and told to identify only the primary colors. With the oil crayons, the students were asked to choose a room in their house and draw it. The intention of the assignment was not to gauge drawing ability but to find out if the children recognized the primary colors which should be an achieved skill at the kindergarten level.

Children who have no prior knowledge of primary colors may require additional help, but this assignment may be especially difficult with students who are color blind, have trouble with fine motor skills, or students with disabilities. Modification may be needed.
